Things to be sure about —
Throughout this time of isolation, I have had my fair share of Netflix and Amazon Prime shows watched. Now I have stopped the binging and am reading more about nature, fiction, and keeping active biking, volunteering with animals and singing.
It is evident from the shows I indulged in that no matter how imperfect families can be, the “hold” which is the love that a family has can be strong in the midst of change. My extended family stretches from PA, to NJ, upstate NY, and WA. state, but it is knit not only by DNA, but also common traits and interests. It is also bound by the beliefs and example set by our parents.
Our parents died in 2014 in the same year with 4 months apart, but they continue to live on within us. In some cases we have made very different choices than our parents. But we know where they would have stood and that lies in our hearts. We navigate our way confident that the guidance they gave us will remain with us.
When you see the grandchildren of our parents there is a lot of diversity. The eight embrace an expanse of careers including medicine, aviation, business leaders, teachers and coaches, and computer engineers. In just one generation there has been much change. They exhibit both talent and lots of grit in excelling in their careers. Each young person makes me proud and their lives are changing daily in positive ways. Not to gloss over the challenges they have, but I am confident of how they will handle any difficulties.
The great grandchildren have given us eight more individuals and unique young ones from 1-5 years old. They are creative, artistic, active, and athletic. They have lots of educational advantages and they are taking it all in. We have cooks and readers and farmers and those who love animals and those who love art and nature. We have gone from living across the country from east to west to embracing the countries of Brazil and India.
