Most of my life I have spent studying books, writing about books, selling books and for the past 8 months researching and writing my own blog. Books and the culture of art, photography, music and writing are more than passions for me – they are indeed my way of life. Sailing Close to the Wind
When I lived in Annapolis in the 80’s, my husband taught at the U.S. Naval Academy. I was lucky enough to be allowed to sail in their fantastic sailing program. This is where the plebes get their feel for water – its power as well as its splendor. There are valuable lessons to be learned on sailing vessels. One afternoon I watched several plebes sail an 18 ft. boat hard into the slip with the mainsail still flying. They had ignored our cries to drop the mainsail and they tried to stop the boat with their legs. This proved a painful lesson for them. Many afternoons I would climb on…

Looking from the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice Sooner or later, every writer feels the need to talk about her writing. It is in the bones. I have many shelves of writing books and one thing I have learned from them is that they can’t tell me how to write. Yes, we can learn excellent grammar, great plotting skills and clever metaphors, but in the end, writing comes from both the subconscious (the Jungian side of the brain) and the conscious (the thinking vibrant mind that is daily renewed by our observations, reading and engagement with others).
